Barbados National Championships 2008...

B'dos National Squash Championships - Day 6 results

The results in the first round of the Men’s and Ladies’ Main Draw of the 34th annual Barbados National Squash Championships, sponsored by the Barbados Olympic Association, were fairly predictable with the higher seeded players all cruising through to the quarterfinals with minimal expenditure of effort.

In fact all matches were won in straight games apart from two. The #3/4 seed, Bryant Cumberbatch, looked a little rusty and dropped the first game and was 3-5 down in the second game to the consistent Don Benn before reeling off 24 out of the final 25 points in the match to win 3/9 9/6 9/0 9/0 with some style. The #5/8 seed Nigel Griffith also took a while to warm up against John Freer and dropped his first game also before settling down and claming the next three games for the loss of just three points to win 6/9 9/2 9/0 9/1. In the Ladies Main Draw there were only two matches played with Cilla Seale and Lea Solomon both willing easily in straight games against Zoe Lisk and Asha Gibbs respectively.

Action continues on May 15th (Thursday) at the Barbados Squash Club when the Men’s and Ladies quarter-finals will be played. Play continues also in the Men’s Plate and the Men’s Consolation Plate (i.e. playoffs for 9th place) will commence also. Until Friday (May 16th) matches begin at the BSC each evening at 5:00 p.m. and continue until approximately 9:00 p.m. The national finals will be played between 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon May 17th with the trophy presentation for the Veterans and the Open competitions to be held directly after the conclusion of the Men’s Final which is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m.
